  5. doorkeeper of the U.S. House of Representatives for 24 years;
  6. in Greensboro, N.C. Miller, who got his nickname as a child
  7. because he was so small, had an eccentric approach to his
  8. duties. He claimed he helped Democratic members by sanding his
  9. fingertips so that he could recognize their names by touch on
  10. the metal disks drawn to determine office assignments. His 1977
  11. memoir "Fishbait" was laced with tales of drunken, lecherous
  12. lawmakers who found themselves "with their tail in a crack."
